Know the Know

by Todd Brunel

Recorded live at the American Festival of Microtonal Music, September 7th, 2012, in Boston, MA.

Microtonal Music

"The beauty of working with Know Orchestra is finding like-minded collaborative partners who delight in the creative process. The timbral nuance is an exciting and challenging palette with which to write. The pieces of our mini-suite draw on pantonal composers Mel Powell and more traditional 20th century composers such as Alban Berg. The subtle use of microtonality is not merely affectation, but an integrated thematic expressive tool." - Todd Brunel

Gothic Moonscapes

by Dan Shaud

Recorded live at the American Festival of Microtonal Music, September 7th, 2012, in Boston, MA.

Microtonal Music

"Gothic Moonscapes is part of a larger suite composed by members of Know Orchestra for the American Festival of Microtonal Music. The piece exploits “out of tune” harmonics that are easily produced on the horn (the 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics, which do not fit in the tempered scale). The opening melody, sung and played on violin, utilizes these unusual pitches, and is developed throughout the piece. The movement concludes with a microtonal chorale setting of the melody, followed by a raw statement of the descending harmonic series in the horn and the low fundamental." - Dan Shaud
